Mad Love – Joker and Harley Quinn

One of the classic enduring pieces of Batman folklore has been the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn.

This relationship has never been explored in the movies but is well traversed territory for the Batman animated series, the TV series (Birds of Prey) and she even has a major role in the latest computer game Arkham Asylum.

But it is in the graphic novel “Mad Love” by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm that the relationship is defined.

For the uninitiated:

“The story revolves around the Joker’s sidekick Harley Quinn. Once psychologist Dr. Harleen Quinzel, she fell in love with the Joker after spending time with him inside Arkham Asylum. She develops an obsession with him, and turns to crime just to win his love (as Harley Quinn), which eventually she never does” (Wikipedia). It is a classic tale of unrequited love.

And of course, for such a classic tale involving the Joker there has to be a Youtube video that explores it.

There are some flaws to this fan video by ZoettaPerry. But it does a great job in capturing the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn. It has scenes with Heath Ledger in his definitive role as the Joker and scenes with Kate Hudson as Harleen Quinzel (loved her in Almost Famous).

The song (Breaking Benjamin – Breath), is actually quite apt. I actually found this video by accident while searching for the song.

“So sacrifice yourself, and let me have what’s left.
I know that I can find the fire in your eyes.
I’m going all the way, get away, please.

You take the breath right out of me.
You left a hole where my heart should be.
You got to fight just to make it through,
’cause I will be the death of you.”
